Surviving isn’t just about blowing zombie’s heads off. Depression, starvation, trust issues, loneliness, illness, insanity. These are just some of the things you have to deal with in Project Zomboid.

First of all — YOU WILL DIE

You’re trapped in a quarantined city with a million zombies. There is no escape. There is no cure. The end is coming, so get used to it.

Project Zomboid is about the choices you make, and how you choose to live your last days on Earth. As a hero who goes out in a moment of heroic self-sacrifice to save a defenseless family? Or a callous coward who saves his own skin and leaves his companions for dead?

It’s these choices, and the story you weave in your adventure. That is what Project Zomboid is all about. Not saving the world with some pie in the sky cure, or flying away in a helicopter where everything will probably be okay. This is the apocalypse.

The World

As Project Zomboid develops, we will be adding new areas to the world, so that eventually you will have a huge city and surrounding suburbs and countryside to explore. Any building can be used as a safehouse, and any building can be looted for equipment to help you survive. You can hunt out weapons at the local gun shop, anti-biotics at the pharmacy, and food at the local market. But at a pinch raiding people’s fridges, sheds and medicine cabinets will keep you going.

The Story

Right now, the outside world knows nothing about the zombie threat. The government has quarantined the city, and cut off all communication with the outside world. The news is rife with speculation about the events that are occurring in the city borders. Soon they will know, and wish they didn’t. The quarantine can’t hold forever, and just outside the exclusion zone lies the still operational local power plant. Once that goes, batteries and canned food will be worth more than their weight in gold.

As you play Project Zomboid, the longer you survive, the game-world changes around you as the apocalypse develops. You can keep up on current events by turning on a radio, and those events will affect your situation as time progresses. You may even be able to influence them.

The People

Surviving is easier when you have company. As well as (planned future) friends joining you in co-op multiplayer to help you survive, you can meet thousands of diverse characters that you can trade with, join forces with, battle for resources, betray, help, or work for. Diverse randomly generated quests such as helping them find loved ones, finding them equipment or sentimental mementos to escorting them through the more infected areas of town.

In your group, you must deal with the different personalities and relationships, which can sometimes lead to deadly friction. And what to do with that clumsy kid who keeps leaving doors open and making way too much noise? Give him a talking to, or ask him to accompany you on a salvage mission and blowing his brains out down the street, before returning and claiming to the others he got eaten by zombies? It’s up to you how you keep people safe, and what lengths you will go to.

Self Improvement

There are all manner of skills and perks the player can develop to help them survive. 50% unique and innovative, 50% ripped off other titles, our unique and innovative skills and perks systems keep character progression interesting and avoids the dull increasing of numerical values, without sacrificing depth.

Learn skills from other survivors for everything from shotgun operation to cooking, medical training, carpentry and orienteering, that can then be increased as your character progresses and provide unique bonuses as they develop.

Pick a profession for your character which bestows unique perks to them, and pick up further perks as you play by completing hidden ‘achievement’ style criteria, meaning your character can be trained up differently depending on your play style and preferences of weapons and tactics.

Mind and Body

You can sustain injuries to any part of your body, from a broken leg to a concussion. These will need to be bandaged, set, cauterized or otherwise dealt with to keep you going. Illness and disease is also a real possibility, so better bury those corpses in the garden or set light to them before you catch something, because the hospital’s a long way away!

But it’s not just physical injuries that you can be inflicted with. The zombie apocalypse is hard to deal with, and it’s easy to sink into depression, or worse. You must try and keep your morales high, your stress down, and take some time for the little things to keep you and your companions sane. A hot shower, a cooked meal or a bit of music will go a long way.

If people are at the end of their rope, they may become withdrawn, fight, cry, or even stick a gun in their mouth and pull the trigger (which makes a lot of noise!). Paranoia can fool the senses and outright insanity isn’t easy to come back from. Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs can keep the darkness at bay, but rely on them too much and you may get addicted.

    Hey Guys

I was just wondering if you took any inspiration from the walking dead series (Graphic novel or TV). Things like firing a gun can attract more Zeds to your location, and having a community constantly being maintained at you safehouse/caravan working on defences and morale while you’re away etc.

Its all really interesting stuff, I’ve been looking forward to a Zombie Survival game where there was more to it than just, build barriers, shoot oncoming horde, repair barriers, shoot zombies, shoot zombies, shoot zombies

Wish you the best of luck with this, and I’m counting on you!

Part of me wants to like the idea of sanity and depression, but part of me has never seen it implemented in a way that wasn’t obtrusive, unfun, and unrealistic (CoC:Dark Corners of the Earth comes to mind. It basically came down to looking away from anything scary, as if it goes away if you can’t see it.)

I think this game looks great but the overall premise is what kind of kills it to me. I mean is there REALLY no way to ever ‘win” or achieve something great like a decent fort that will at least last you a while? I mean I don’t mind eventually dying in a zombie apocalypse but I’ve never been a fan of games that eventually always draw the same conclusions. Would there be perhaps different parameters or side things people could do to give them a goal if they want it, like say create a defensible garrison or some sort of bay with boats? Anyway the game still looks very interesting. I will be looking forward to seeing more!

This might become the greatest game ever! :)

Ideas that popped in my mind:
Make it so that npc:s might also betray the player, when frustrated maybe attack/kill players friend, maybe attack the player if npc dont believe him, steal from player, when in pinch maybe just leave the player and escape. Also I hope that player will be able to use almost anything as a weapon/food/tool/bandage. Also the importance of disinfecting wounds with fire/alcohol.. If wet, the possibility catch a cold. Maybe some ability to train (ie. do pushups to get more strength or bonuses or something).. different gangs that might kill the player for loot or take him as a member,. or maybe just rob or rape him.
Let the player be able to burn down whole houses!
There should also be a limited number of zombies. as many as is the citys population (ie. 5 000 000) So that if you want, you can try to kill allll the zombies.

    Good luck with the game!

It sounds really good, I love zombie games, but, it kinda sucks how you say it is a ‘pre-alpha DEMO’ but you have buy something to play it, in my personal opinion, that kinda sucks. (yes, i am aware i use too many commas) Though, i dont doubt it is a brillant game!

    May 30, 2011 at 1:37 am #

this is a realy good and thoght out idea here are a few ideas that you might look into.

    #1communitys
Occanialy you will find a group of survivers in forts of many kinds with a possible chance of some traders or some mercenarys, you can do many things from there such as A become a highranked citizen building on the walls, becoming mayor, etc. B cheer up your party on a sunday night service at the local church etc. C take over the fort and grow an empire, to prevent the fort from being invincible how about adding THE HORDE witch comes after some time also preventing survival of the player THE HORDE will only quell once you die.

    #2 THE HORDE (expanded)
Once a certin amount of time has passed a massive HORDE will come one that can’t be beaten the HORDE will stop once you die should there be a fort with proteted babies the babies will repopulate the world and if you are luckey or a famous empire leader you will be rememberd in a history book, meanwhile you can watch a timelapse of events in the past as it caulculates the future and adds it to the timelaspse then depending on certin things will the forts hold together and create a society/civilsation or will they be dummy’s and nuke eatchother/get eaten etc for thinking alliances were bad either way zombies will dieout rether its because there’s no food or peeps evoled to smart peeps.

#3 wait where are the zombies? mode
In this mode forts exist and all that but there are no zombies, in story realtivity lets say this is after the dissaster and forts are trying to find out who’s boss. this would be great in multiplayer or if you added an rts emement to the game, or both.

I don’t usualy blog this much so this is special, hope you like my ideas. :)

I don’t know how you are planning to do the injuries, but it would be cool if they would never heal. For example, lets say you get shot in your leg. It will hurt as hell and you’ll need painkillers to stop from fainting, and some hours to start walking again, but you’ll probably won’t be able to run again, or at least it won’t be as fast or for as long as it once was. Unless, of course, you meed a medic who can help you more

    the game looks great, btw

  21. Nicolas
    June 2, 2011 at 8:10 pm #

I don’t know how are you doing the injuries now, but it would be cool if some injuries would never completely heal. For example, if you get shot in a leg, it would hurt as hell and would need painkillers to prevent fainting, but, after you recover, your leg would still hurt a bit, and would prevent you from running too fast or for too long. But if you meet a doctor, maybe he can remove the bullet from the leg and then everything would be different.

    The game looks great

You know… Sex could be a great way for a giant morale and trust boost between 2 people. The downside here would be the massive morale loss if the partner dies.

The whole npc thing sound awesome!!! my question is if you ask an npc to guard your house while you are on a supply run would there be some sort of way to contact them? i mean if there would be something like a radio that would be cool but i dont want my radio going off for only 1 zombie. Maybe they can roughly tell you how many are outside of the house.or you can check up on them from time to time so your radio is not spontaneously going off alerting a horde.

This looks good, but the player should be able to have an impact. It depends on the amount of survivors alive. If there are enough, they should be able to, for example, develop power. If you have at least one or two scientists and 20 or so survivors, you should be able to. However, we all learn in elementary school basically how to make elictricity. You could also raid labratories. However, this is just one example. By the way, if only one city is quarantined and zombie infested then just use a tactical nuke. And why can’t the government hold the quarantine infinetly? They have the whole army. If one team of people can survive and kill hordes of zombies, why can’t the army with official training and rpgs just take the city? At minimum, you should make a larger portion of the whorld infected.

    June 10, 2011 at 3:18 am #

to the above poster, If you look they said its the REGION not the city, the region includes 3-4 cities and surrounding countryside which unfortunately is too large for tactical nukes unless you wanted to drop 3-4 making your method slightly less plausable,

Also due to the fact that its been successfully quaranteened and they have the area locked down the military is likely researching the area and finding out whats going on rather then trying to stamp it out *due to the fact that even if they did it may continue to spread they won’t know for at least a month or two of testing+other factors* and worse yet their is the political fallout if they nuke the area etc. its possible that it could be a year+ before they fully move to exterminate the zombies.

So I’m in the middle of a very long game, and ive survived for a long time without running into any huge hordes (or rather, fighting any. I saw a huge one on the way to the bar to get some empty bottles for molotovs, but i ran away and decided to just drink my whiskey.) and i just got back from a rather long trip to the supermarket. I got very bogged down with weight, so i decided to drink all my whiskey ( which caused a TON of tiredness, I love that new effect!) and when i finally got back to the shack kin the woods, i started seeing random zombies in my periphery only to find them gone when i turn! I couldnt tell if this was a glitch or a feature, but it does seem to make a lot of sense with my characters insane alcoholism (lol) that he might be seeing things. if it isnt a glitch, great job. i love it. If it is, i would consider using what information you gather from fixing it to actually implemnt it again to create the paranoia effect.

I am really looking forward to this game. It is the first Zombie Survival game i have ever seen where you have to take ACTUAL Survival thoughts into mind. Not only do you have to keep reminding yourself you need to stay out of sight as much as possible so you won’t track a horde, but you also need to keep in mind all of the physical and mental challenges that come with it. Disease, infection. This is a seller for me. But two things i would like to see In future updates: make the zombie sighting better, so you really know when zombies are in front of you or not. But only when it’s possible to see them in a real apocalypse. Other than that, it’s a real game changer to open a door and see 15-20 zombies in front of that door. Also, try and consider a possible escape route, cause, well you pretty much have to implement that chance if that certain city is the only infected place. But that doesn’t mean you CAN escape. Other than that, i really am looking forward to this game. Can’t wait to see it when it’s finished.

  41. June 22, 2011 at 9:03 pm #

I think you guys should release a toolset with it as well, to allow map making and creations. I’d LOVE to recreate my home town and share it with my friends! :)

As a huge fan of the demo and games like this you have done an amazing job and keep it going, but some people on this ask for too much, you say the characters a poor but would you rather bad graphics or an awesome game? stop complaining and be happy with what you have been given and be thankful that it is truly awesome. Though i must say adding more guns such as a pistol and sniper (country guns not fucking miniguns) but still. Sorry for the essay just expressing my opinion.

  43. michael holt
    June 23, 2011 at 8:24 am #

lol i think you should be able to get out BUT wait there’s more like you said there like other city’s around so you get out and have like a small time before the zombies come the same way you did and so then that city is infected just a idea but now that i look back on it there will probably be to many people and not have the fell as well as having to many stuff because its not been attacked yet and oh you have to die so if you want to win lets say set what age you are and once you get to age 100 you win congrats ^_^ oh and just a shot gun is silly a pistol but i am not sure about a sniper rifle because it will have so much range of course guns will be a thing you have to work at like maby when the guy with the shot gun comes in to kill and rape your wife you cold ask for some lessons on how to use the gun you found lol but this game looks awesome flash lights are gonna be super use full even when there is power because it will suck to be in a house at night then BAM you dont see a zombie because of the smaller night vision so he bites you game over but this game is awesome and i like the sex idea above

  44. June 23, 2011 at 9:14 pm #

Brillant game … Played the demo and each time i beat my previous surivival record even though im still a noob at it!. It’s exciting and scary at the same time when you walk into a dark house and a zombie appears around the corner your heart starts thumping… This game is truely thrilling and i can’t wait for this to be fully released and also when the CO-OP comes out this is going to be AWSOME!!!! ….

    One question

In co-op when the 4 or more players start in the game will they be set in the same place or scatterd around the town trying to survive for themeselves? there only way of suriviving is holding up in a house or finiding the other players that would be an intresting multiplayer aspect… Anyway wish you the best of luck and i will be buying this game very soon… BEST OF LUCK!

The third time, things were going great until I set the house on fire, and ran into the shed getting eaten by zombies.

Played the demo, loved it, purchased two copies for myself and my g/f. The “Minecraft business model” should work well for you guys! Looking forward to seeing it mature into an amazing product.

Sounds like a great game, might be buying it soon but…Lets suppose someone is REALLY skilled in the game and can survive a long time and he end up consuming all the food available around the city, will farming be present in the final version? And solar energy generators?
Or will necessary stuff like food, energy generators and medicine will just respawn around the city? Will there be aging in the game?
Sorry if my questions bugs any of you, i just like to know all i can about a game before buying it, just to know if it lives up to me expectations. Which, by the way, are really high for this game.

  63. Thank you, I’ve just been looking for info approximately this topic for a long time and yours is the greatest I have discovered so far. But, what about the conclusion? Are you sure about the source?|What i don’t realize is actually how you are not really a lot more well-preferred than you might be right now. You are so intelligent.

This game is the game that all zombie movie and game fans have been waiting forever for. I have not yet bought the game, but i will be soon. I cant wait for multiplayer. By the way, will the co-op be like 4 people surviving together, because i thought it would be cool if there was like 16 people, and they all spawned in different parts of the city and could either find each other and team up, or take a more hostile approach towards the other survivors. Just some ideas.

And if you get bitten in multiplayer or co-op, it would be cool if you became a zombie too but you were somehow better than the normal rabble.

You should do the idea where in co-op you dont spawn together.

Really no ending. It can at least be ending with you making the great fort(Market .Docks .Gun store.Houses/Tents/apartments.That is all i ask for with a ending.Expect its not really the ending.Because you can keep playing .Use the docks to go to england or something .Or stay in america. How about russia is safe from the zombies for a ingame year .Unless you build a great wall of russia.

Oh and how about a cure for early zombie disease .Zombie disease stages.Stage 1 :Skin becomes zombish.Stage 2 :You slow down .Stage 3:You begin you start losing controll. Some times you may go feral and attack a fellow survivor.Stage 4 .Full zombie .The disease is curable untill stage 2.

Thanks for these pointers. One thing I also believe is always that credit cards giving a 0% rate of interest often bait consumers together with zero rate of interest, instant authorization and easy on-line balance transfers, but beware of the most recognized factor that may void the 0% easy neighborhood annual percentage rate and also throw you out into the bad house rapidly.aiyi9527$$$$$

  99. May 10, 2012 at 9:36 pm #

I just tried the demo. IT BLEW MY MIND!!!!

I have always wanted to play a zombie game that lets me feel like I’m doing exactly what I would do if this were a real life event (Including leaving the stove on by accident and getting ambushed by zombies when I try to escape with my wife. I’m a klutz.) You have fulfilled my dream.

The controls are a little ackward in some places (5 tries to put an object away, the speed-up buttons are neccesities when travelling) but great in other places, like the array of emoticon-like status thingies on the side. And the music was absolutely perfect. I can’t imagine music more fitting to the game (as I played it).

PS This is only my second play and I survived for 2 days 3 hours. I’m going to keep playing until I keep Kate alive for a week! (BTW GREAT job making the player feel emotionally attached to the NPC’s.)

PPS rofl at “I miss the days when we didn’t take a hammer to bed.”

Is there a way to survive longer than 2 days? I’ve been shot by my neighbor after letting him up, shot by him after barricading him out and waiting a day, and of course the demise I mentioned above. I suppose I COULD abandon Kate, and it’s only a demo…but is there a way to survive past the opt-of-soup point AND not abandon Kate?
