Okay it’s sooner than we’d have liked. The game is still a bit buggy and who knows what crashes and bugs you’ll uncover and please be patient with us.
We released since our private testing was leaked onto 4chan, so containing it after that point seems foolish.
Please remember this is just a tech demo, a sign of things to come, and is much simpler, smaller and shallower than the full game will be. So please don’t judge what it will become on what it is now (unless it’s good judging, obviously)
A public demo will be released in the coming days, when we’ve ironed out serious bugs and added a couple of things we feel necessary for the public demo.
In the meantime if you want to play you’ll have to buy. Sorry but we need to make a good impression for the public demo and having bugs and stuff will do us a lot of harm.

Sorry to hear that the kiddies at 4chan couldn’t respect your development of the game.
I understand you guys really need the money and want to make a good public demo, but have you taken into consideration that its easier to let people play the game and then get excited about it, instead of expecting them to be excited first then letting them play the game? I’m just saying, buggy as it may be, I feel you would have seen a far bigger surge in sales by letting everyone in right now instead of “locking out” people who may go on to stop caring about a game that only lets people who’ve paid take a look at the demo.

You must’ve missed the line where they said the DEMO would be free and that this was NOT the DEMO, but rather the pre-alpha tech demo. There is no company that has ever been that has released a demo that was only playable by those who were already getting the full game. Just wouldn’t make sense.

You can keep saying you have nothing to do with the threads on /v/, but they are not gonna listen to you.
For some reason, half of /v/ has got the thought into their head that every thread about an unreleased or recently released game is actually viral marketing.
We’ve tried arguing with them, but they refuse to listen to reason, so just ignore them.
You can check out the Terraria developers FAQ from a bit back. They were accused of the exact same thing, and tried to reason with them in it.

Well since i had a pre-order been playing for a few hours , the intro saying this is very basic and not the full version and not meant to be hours of fun. LOL
i have been having a blast just with what has been released.
Only suggestions are to remove the little intro everytime you start or let you skip it.

I experienced that on my parents’ computer, which is a Windows XP, 17″ laptop. I’m running a Windows 7, 1600 x 900 monitor desktop. I suggest you send your specs to their bug report (I believe they do have one).
So I know you wouldn’t want to tell, but I really hope the game will start at the beginning of the infection. No games ever allow you to go through the panic phase of a zombie outbreak. all games just skip the start when everything breaks out and people would be fleeing in the streets and looting building while zombies roam the streets attacking anything they can.

…No thanks, I have huge issues with java’s licensing and performance. You lost a potential customer with that move, sorry guys. I’ve seen enough nasty moves from Oracle in recent months with lawsuits aplenty regarding java and patents; I won’t touch it with a ten foot pole now.
This is a separate issue from the actual development of the game. Java is free and open to use for whatever the heck you want. They actually can’t take action against somebody for writing a game in their language. The Java programming language doesn’t require a license to commercially use. Aside from that, they can’t sue you either.
Also, Java has gotten pretty fast. Using LWJGL means it can make calls to graphics hardware, which puts the game in roughly comparable speeds to C++ using OpenGL (which LWJGL uses).
The myth that Java is slow is just that– a myth.

I’m at work so I couldn’t really give this a full test run, but from the few minutes of my first play-through, I can say I’m very excited and can’t wait to see how this progresses and matures into a full game. I like the concept of releasing early and often, so the community can help with bug hunting and feature testing.

You can just forward your receipt number to the devs. If you look on the forums, there’s also a script to enter in your email address and get a username sent. The automated system should be up in a few days to weeks!

The free demo is coming later, this is an alpha release for preorderers to work out the bugs and get an early look. Once those bugs are gone it’ll be free to try out before buying.

Great game very realistic, some bugs you may have already herd some of these but i’ll mention what i have found; shooting zombies sometimes doesn’t work, when the guy with the gun came into my house, because there was zombies outside he was talking to Katie at the front door rather than in the room, in the middle of combat i clicked the painting in the living room area, which made me go to sleep and pots multiply after using them and eating contents. That is all i can recall at the moment loving the game keep up the good work guys.
P.S. when the alpha comes out will there be a save feature ?

I would really like to play this, but I just get a blank screen through the browser. I’m running linux so would happily play it outside the browser but that doesn’t work either: I get a ClassNotFoundException: zombie.GameWindow – so that suggests, to me at least, that I don’t have the class file on my computer – any chance of sending me a zip of the class files.
I think this is an ace project being a big zombie fan and someone who would be oddly happy if the Z-Day comes! How would I look after my kids, damn that’s a scary thought.

I had the same issue the first time. Turnt out the screen to log in had popped up behind my browser. once I minimized the browser I could log in then the java all loaded.

When I try to play it, it opens a window for PZ, but then, said window stays black… forever.

For those have a problem with the black screen/stalling java screen, this is because you haven’t signed in yet. When the page opens up, there’s a pop-up that asks you for your username and pass. However sometimes this pop-up can get lost behind your browser, so try reloading the page and then closing all your windows and you’ll see it sitting just above your desktop. Sign in and everything runs smoothly from there.
I’m having the same black screen issue, and even after turning off my pop up blockers and refreshing the site/reloading the browser I’m still not seeing anything that allows me to log in to play the game. Is there any other way to log in?

Kate wont appear in bed, like shes talking but bed is empty, and that makes things difficult because i cant interact with her.. like bandage her leg and stuff.

Well done guys, I’ve been playing it, and dying regularly since it was first released. Can’t wait to see how things progress. There are no doubt a lot of bugs to be squished, but always interesting to log in and see new things available. Wish there was a save game facility as I’m getting sick of going through the same routine every time like ground-hog day only to get shotgun in the face. Would rather be able to save and reload so I can try out different things without a complete restart. Other than that it’s awesome.

I’m glad to see it becoming more commonplace (Even if only with Indie Developers) that graphics are taking a backseat so that more important qualities (Story, Gameplay) can take the wheel.
With games like Minecraft and now Project Zomboid there is small glimmer of hope for the video game industry that has become so over saturated with military shooters, sequels, reboots and yes even zombies (I just feel this finally does zombies right.) That said, this tech demo is worth every penny if those pennies help ensure that this gets finished.

Just downloaded the game and loved it but I really got frustrated spending too much time starting from the beginning because I always got a shotgun shoved into my face. I would really love to see a save feature on the next version. I am NOT working with them so you dont have to take me seriously. The reason why you cant play the paid version is because it isnt up! they are, however, bringing it back up ASAP! Just w8 and play the alphatec demo for now. Gotta say i was secpticle because of the douch with the shotgun. but i got past him (YAY FOR HIDING IN THE BATHROOM!). i am need of some help, i have downloaded the demo and when i run the demo it gets to the screen where it says this is how you die, and then it crashes, in the black run cmd box it says that there has been a java memory error where all of the heap space has been used. And then it stops responding. i have tried re downloading java several times which will not help (java 6 that is update 27 i think).

You can get around the heap space problem. Edit ProjectZomboid.bat and add -Xmx256m right after “java” in the last line. That will increase the max heap to 256 MB.
like so:
java -Xmx256m -Djava.library.path (etc…)
Worked for me until I died the fourth time, then it ran out of heap again. Could increase the number more, play longer, but I think the game is not releasing resources correctly. Easy enough to restart it after I die.

i can’t play the game on 1.4.c
i downloaded the game on fileplanet,and then extract it in to a folder then run the project zomboid batch file. it starts wonderfully but when it gets to the “This Is How You DIED” part,the cmd (i run on windows xp) then shows Image destroyed more than 20 times than says… java out of memory or something….
but i can play 1.4.b (and accidentally deleted it,because i thought alpha 1.4.c can work)
