There have been a lot of questions regarding what’s happening with Steam. We are not going on the Steam store. It will not be possible to purchase Project Zomboid on Steam for the foreseeable future, and no agreement has been made to do so in the future. We’d love to be on the Steam store, for obvious reasons. But we’re a bit early on for that kinda thing.

Instead they are letting us use their servers, their library, their update system, their DRM (no more logon boxes!) but we will not appear in any form on the store and the game will only be able to appear on your Steam library via redeem codes.

So to go through each issue that’s been raised in comments / tweets / forum posts:

1) When we are on Steam (just as in using their servers and DRM and library via redeem codes) we plan to allow you to transfer from Desura to Steam. The details of how this will take place are not clear at the moment, but there is nothing stopping us from being able to do this.

2) If you’re waiting to purchase the game until it’s on Steam, you could be looking at a year, perhaps more. Perhaps it’ll never be on the Steam store. We just don’t know. I’d like to think we will be, though.

3) Now the update is out (barring a few fixes and optimizations that need sorting when our brains work again) we can go full gear into getting onto Steam. There are a few things we need to do, a bit of PHP programming and whatnot to handle the codes, that we just couldn’t find the time to do while working on the update. So hopefully we’ll have Steam support very soon. However you won’t be able to buy any other way but Desura and Google Checkout for a good while, and both these paths can lead to Steam codes, so if you want the game, don’t let waiting for that stop you.

4) I should add for clarity, that you don’t actually need to go to Desura to ultimately get a Steam code, though the benefits of using Desura (like having auto-updating) that you’re after in Steam in the first place should be the reasons you decide to use it (also, to be honest, it makes our lives 1000x easier and Scott has done some awesome things for our game and other alphadonationware indie titles with the service). The route from Desura to Steam is through our own user database. Desura will offer a way for you to register on our servers and get a PZ username / password to your e-mail, and it’s once you’re in our database we’ll be able to assign you a Steam code.

Obviously it’s up to you where you purchase from, but we will say that if you’re easy either way, going with Desura is our preferred choice. Firstly we feel they more than deserve their cut and our support for being so accommodating to our game on their service, secondly they cut down severely on the amount of administrative stuff we need to deal with and thirdly, it’s a lot easier to update the version there and lastly it keeps us once removed from the terrors of online merchants ;) Obviously at the moment Linux and Mac users are not able to use it, but once we’re on Steam and Desura releases on Linux, we should have a distribution platform for each and every platform.

Thank you! :)

Indie Stone

What Ringod said. At the end of the day Terraria is not a finished product either, but comparing the two it’s clear that PZ is still much more in its infancy and lacks some polish. If we do go on there I doubt we’ll have to have a completely finished product, but it will have to feel like a complete game in what is present in terms of polish and content.

Well, I’m glad to hear that. Way too many people these days seem to think options are overrated and go Steam-exclusive, which is a definite no-go for me.

So, I just hope they stick to what they’ve promised and make Steam an alternative, not a requirement – I’d really hate having to demand my money back.

        I don’t get steam fanboys.

Its like saying you won’t buy a game if its not at this one store.

Even if other stores offer it for the same price that the store you want to get it from would.

Not to mention, Steam isn’t the bestest thing eveh, i think everyones gotten the unable to start your application error that pops up when it has trouble connecting or some other bs thing that stops you from playing a game you paid for and own.

        • Kurtino
          August 31, 2011 at 5:58 pm #

Not really, since steam has become much more reliable now and if you can never connect to steam you can always play in offline mode or find a very simple and easy fix. That unable to start app error is fixable by deleting a single file or it is server side (aka, in a multiplayer game that too many people are downloading and streaming at a release date or what ever, you may not be able to play for a few minutes).

Steam is reliable, no one’s a fan boy for being disappointed in not being able to use it there because frankly I don’t use desura and I don’t know what the hell it is but I’ve had to go and download another bloody application to open up a directory for games when I would have much preferred sticking to Steam really, considering its so much more popular.

But yes, why would you buy from a store you have no knowledge of? Would you buy a game if it was from some corner shop and had no reliability or reputation really? This is just an example cause I’ve looked into desura at all but you get my point, people refusing to buy just because they don’t want to google checkout or Desura are completely in their own right to do so, why don’t you look at all sides of the story before making silly comments like these to be perfectly honest.

If you buy either the standalone version or the Desura version, you can transfer it to Steam (shortly). You just can’t buy the game directly from Steam. Either way, you end up with the same result so it doesn’t make a difference.

    • Tal

reread the post, “If you’re waiting to purchase the game until it’s on Steam, you could be looking at a year, perhaps more. Perhaps it’ll never be on the Steam store”

You’ll be waiting quite a while to redeem it but my advice would be just to enjoy it on desura till they confirm a date.

The new version makes the old game hardly recognisable, the devs have done a fantastic job so far :D

Only problem now is that the npc humans are a slightly bigger threat since they seem to kill just about anything that moves…

      • Drake Sirlit
        August 29, 2011 at 5:46 pm #

Actually, you’re wrong there. You’ll be able to redeem it on steam sooner than you’ll be able to buy it there. Steam is letting IndieStone make use of the Steam servers early. So if you bought it on Desura, redeeming it on Steam isn’t too far off yet. As I understand it.

  24. kaluce
    August 29, 2011 at 7:20 pm #

I can’t wait till there is a steam version. I understand the reason why the devs went with Desura, but there are so many game delivery engines out there, GFW (games for windows), GPG (gas powered games), steam, Desura, Gamespy, Raptr, etc.

awhile back i settled on Steam, and generally tried to stay away from all the other engines, but now i have GFW, Steam, and now Desura on my machine.

with all the flaws that steam started with, it’s actually come around as one of the most refined interfaces out there.

The game isn’t finished yet. You can buy the alpha version of the game for 6 euros and keep the game (the finished one + updates) for your whole lifetime (at a discounted price, which WILL go up later) on desura. Valve allowed the indie stone to use Steam for their game only to distribute it to people that want it on steam, BUT it may, or WILL NOT be on the steam STORE in the future. I bought it from Desura for 6 euros, later you’ll be able to transfer it to steam and voila. IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE GAME AND ARE QQ’ING AND FLAMING ABOUT IT, GET YOUR REFUND, LEAVE NOW AND NEVER COME BACK! By paying now at a discounted price (6 euros) you are buying the game AND supporting the devs to develop it. GG and THANK YOU the indie stone! CHEERS AND GOOD LUCK!

relax “look guys” you seem pretty upset for no reason..

I’m wondering when we can expect updates? 2 months apparently was an extream amount of time for some reason, I understand it takes time and think 2 months per update isn’t unreasonable. But you chose to not give information on update times ever again because you made one mistake… I don’t think that’s fair to us because we never demanded the updates be released at a certain time, you simply told the community this was the date, it didn’t happen then and then you refused to give us dates again because the minority cried like bitches.

Just wondering when we can expect updates so I don’t have to check on this website all the time…. A quick post about what the next update involves would be nice too.

the twitter is useless as it seems to be a “all about “HELP ME I AM NOOB TO INTERNET AND LIFE BUT I LIKE DIS GAEM AND I PAID 5 DOLLARS SO STOP DEVELOPING AND ANSER ME HOW DO I GET A CREDIT CARD TO BUY GAME WHEN I AM 12 AND LIVE WITH MY GRANDMOTHER’S SISTER’s NEPHEW?”.

I was a bit sad it wasn’t gonna get on steam as of yet but I got Desura for PZ. Not that bad, not a hassle at all and a lot of indie selections. I’m rather happy I got it. :)

Sure is frequent updates around here.

“… and you will see as of next week progress on the next update will be shockingly fast …”
“AND REMEMBER. NOW WE’RE BACK TO FULL STRENGTH UPDATES WILL BE MUCH MORE REGULAR. PROMISE”
“The next update will likely be smaller but MUCH faster to develop …”

I would not mind the waiting time at all if the developers would post ANYTHING, but reading the same “Just to Clear Something Up re: Steam” post for a week now is starting to piss me off.
How about a little “Coming up: …”- or “We’re currently working on: …”-post?
Or is the “Information Blackout” still in place because a single troll hurt your feelings?

It took them 2 months for a tiny piss poor update
and you guys think your getting regular fast updates?

I was wondering what the differnce is between project zomboid on Desura or the normal vertion

    September 5, 2011 at 5:18 pm #

Seriously, will all the people who are posting hate comments shut the f**k up, who cares if it’s late Jesus. At least they are bothering to make a Zombie game under the specifications and requests of the players, they are an indie company just fucking leave it alone will you, you don’t know if they had come across problems during production Christ, stop abusing them and just let them get on with making the damn game. I don’t see any of you people making a fucking awesome Zombie game, so all of you shut up and let these guys do their work, fuck. By the way Zomboid team, the update is really good, it’s much better than it was originally, especially with the added sandbox mode :D , keep up the brilliant work guys.

Ok, first of all stop your emo routine, second why all the fanboys are so butthurt these days?
Third… Really… it took them almost two months to make this?? I mean, theres mods in the forums that make the devs look like newbz!

      September 6, 2011 at 8:13 am #

Lol me and my friends just got it that’s what you need to do when the developers of the game fucking make you pay for something that is barely different from the demo…

        September 6, 2011 at 2:19 pm #

you’re ridiculous oO or maybe you are to poor to offer 5$ for a game you can play for hours oO

        • Zombielover4life
          September 6, 2011 at 2:58 pm #

What’s the point of paying £5 for something that’s hardly different then the free demo?

          • bobsteve
            September 6, 2011 at 6:42 pm #

Well, given enough time, the game will likely continue to develop content and features to establish it’s worth above the free demo. At least concede that the devs managed to make a game that you thought was worth your time enough to steal.

If you are so wealthy, please buy me a copy of the game then!

    • dinosaurJR
      September 7, 2011 at 12:14 pm #

      That would be theft.

£5 isn’t breaking the bank now, is it?

If it is – how can you afford the electricity to power the PC that you are trolling from? In fact, how can you afford the PC? Or food? Or clean underwear? Or deodorant? Or spot cream?

Obviously a child with no means of financial support other than your mother…

How much time are we talking it took them 2 months to create hardly nothing new…

And I deleted the “stolen version I had” and stuck with the demo so it was a waste of time actually.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE DEVS?????
took them 2 month for this shitty update, that i bet the people who are modding this could do in 2 hours… then they say “Now were gonna go back to old ways with regular updates 2 damn weeks ago! They havn’t even told us whats taking the update so long or even something saying its almost done.
Which brings me back to my question, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE DEVS

Theft isn’t smart. Neither are you. You are a child. The child of an alcoholic mother who won’t spring £5 for her child to buy a video game. You must troll the web for fun, irritating grownups and downloading bad porn and pirated video games. I pity you.

You are not smart – you are poor.

Rahool.. Thank you for your remarks, but there is some misunderstanding. I have not made any comment on the film. I have merely said that I notice comments on my blog’ on this topic and have then invited discussion and debate by putting aspects of it on my medium. Love..
