So IndieStone UK have spent the past couple of days internetless, due to the fact that Virgin Media are big stupid-heads (this blog post has been rated U for Universal) and cocked up our installation. As such we’ve finally gone out looking for dongles so we can get on the internet since it’s going to be another week before we’re back on proper. ¬¬

We’re dreading looking at our e-mail inboxes. :(

ANYWAY. Progress on the next update has been great and it looks like it will, hopefully, be THE update. The one that really opens up the game and takes it to the next stage. As such it will officially no longer be ‘pre-alpha’ and we’ll be a fully fledged ‘alpha’ whatever that means these days.

  • Save on Quit
  • Multiple map-section support.
  • A completely new official map section!
  • Completely blank maps possible in sandbox. (No tutorial house hang-ups)
  • Various mapping fixes.
  • Maps can be overridden by mods. Any maps in the mods scripts will override the officials ones first, then any maps in the mods stories directory.
  • A bite will only infect 96% of the time. Pretty much always, in practice, but just to give you that bit of doubt when you’ve been bitten (or ultimately if NPCs are bitten)
  • Fixed error where you wouldn’t hit targets when they were dead centre in your facing direction. (Melee much improved)
  • Many NPC improvements.
  • Fixed temperature related stacking issue.

As you can see the list has some quite substantial stuff on it, so this won’t be out in the next day or two. We were aiming for the weekend but suspect it may end up running into early next week.

A note on the NPC improvements. This is a big deal, and while they still have a long way to go, they are much smarter, and ‘play the game’ now instead of running around randomly. They get in groups, establish safehouses, go out on looting missions to stock up their safehouses. And so on.

There’s also this mod, which will be ready to drop into the game upon release of the update.

YAY! So, with our additional map cell, that will be 8 available right off the bat. We doubt it’ll be long before players will be able to get a huge world to play in, long before we could possibly make a huge world ourselves. With each of our official cells, modders will have access to a whole bunch of new tiles and objects, which will then inspire a whole bunch of other maps using those new tiles.

So that’s where we’re at. Still a good amount of work to go, but do not fear, it will be nowhere near to ‘the update of doom’. We still refuse to give a solid date though. :P

    Saving on quit?

    Map chunks?

Player made sections available at update launch for download?

Bites actually infecting almost all the time?

I WANT TO BUY MORE COPIES!!!!

Just please do not slow down development and let the fame and money cloud your vision. This will be the zombie game I’ve been waiting for ever since I read the Zombie Survival Guide.

Development always slows down, and it isn’t the money and the fame which does this. It’s that when you have the proper funding and your game is pretty good already, you can begin working on the huge updates full of features which may take a lot longer to implement based on their complexity. I am looking forward to that time, because by then, the game will hopefully have that well-polished feeling it lacks at the moment.

That too. Hopefully the modding community will help in this regard too. Some of the maps already released are epic, and it will be interesting to see what features/stories/map chunks/NPCs the modding community does to tide us over until next major updates.

I know this may get a bit of backlash, but could you imagine a CoD Nazi Zombie map realized here in PZ. Preferably the theatre or asylum.

Definitely looking forward to the 96% chance of infection most of all. Doubt and uncertainty are key to the zombie apocalypse survival mythos.

Generally when I get bit I just go to the bar, start playing the Juke-box, and then take as many of them with me as possible. The thing is sometimes the game freezes up when I start the Juke-box. Will that be fixed during this update or in another one? Looking forward to this update though.

Really excited :) And proud (is that appropriate?) that you guys chose to use high quality modded maps to add to the official version. I think that really shows maturity when you can dedicate your time to what requires your expertise, namely the coding, and leave the world expansion to people who can do a solid job at that task.

Decided to buy the game based on this update. I can’t wait for all these features, but I’m also really trying to be patient for a co-op mode. This game has a bright future, in my eyes. =)

the npc fixes sound great, now i can finally loot other safehouses.
    one question about this though:
will they stop opening locked and even fully barricaded doors like they were normal doors?

96% chance of infection won’t create even the smallest bit of doubt in most players, they will just kill bitten person/stop playing if they are bitten. The same even with 90%. I suggest lowering that chance to about 80%. One in five is high enough chance for people to have hope even if it will still usually end badly.

    • Mercurio
      September 23, 2011 at 3:45 pm #

You could put the infection value even lower, to something like 75% or 60%.

When they add amputations, they could substract up to another 50% or so from the infection chance, of a bitten limb.

      • Kaeo
        September 23, 2011 at 6:56 pm #

All great points! I agree, that I’d just kill the guy or probably stop playing no matter what. The lower the chance gets, the more hesitant I’d be. Even with a 25% chance of getting infected, I’d still get rather paranoid. 96% is too hopeless, especially when my character is bitten.

      • Billfan222
        September 27, 2011 at 12:03 am #

How about 0% of ever getting infected? I mean this game is supposed to be about lasting forever yeah? Not about getting killed because you’re a moron and decide to go looting for shotguns when you don’t really need one. Possibly offending sarcasm aside, I think that even 96% is too low. You get bit you die. That’s the point of zombies. But it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and it’s their game anyway. So I guess I’ll just have to live with it.

So happy about the 96% infection chance on bite, that little bit of doubt is enough to stop me from going on a rampage when I get bitten

Hello, I really like the articles of your blog! That’s why I want to ask you whether you are interested in a link exchange? How it works: We both place a link to the website each other (With wordpress you can use the blogroll or the text widget). And that’s the result of a link exchange: We get visitors from the other homepage. Besides our websites ranks better on search engines, which means more visitors too. And who isn’t interested in even more visitors? ;-) I already placed your link on the sidebar of my website which has about 110 visitors per day. If you’re interested, place a link to my website. Else if you aren’t interested I will remove the link on my page after 5 days. Thank you and please write soon more such articles. Greets!!

There are quite a few methods in which you can conserve cash. I know that ever given that milk rates have gone up I have had to end investing so substantially money on unneeded splurge spending. I have also started out buying on the net attempting to come across the best deal relatively than getting whats on sale in the keep.

Please add water and thirst as feature of the game.

Water is the basis of all life and is essential to any survivalist. Features: Like tap water pollution, collection of rain water, dehydration and thirst hallucinations, water purification tablets/machines/chemicals, waterborne diseases, water as a trade item, human competition near water sources (i.e. bandits seizing water centers like purification plants/rivers and selling it to survivors)

    Thankyou
