EDIT: Due to recent events we’ve released the public demo earlier than anticipated, so our paid customers have something to play. Torrent only, I’m sure you understand. Click here for download.

Pirates have made a version of the game that auto-downloads Project Zomboid from our server whenever the player clicks an ‘update’ button.

We’ve always turned a blind eye to pirate copies, even on occasion recommending people who had problems with the legit version try a pirate version until the issues are resolved. We realise the potential viral benefits of pirate copies, and while obviously we’d prefer people to purchase our issue is not with those.

However, these ‘auto updating’ versions of the game could screw us completely. We have a cloud based distribution model, where the files are copied all over the world and are served to players on request, which means we are charged money for people downloading the game. Whether piracy actually amounts to lost sales we’re not going to get into. The possibility that it raises awareness and promotes the game cannot be ignored, but the difference is offline versions on torrents, which we’ve been largely unconcerned about, do not cost us real money, only potential money, and even then we can’t really guess at what the net effect is. Likewise people who download the game through our website only download it when there is a new version, so once every week or so. These new pirate copies have an ‘update now’ button which will download the game every time it’s clicked, potentially every time the game is run by everyone using it.

Apologies for everyone who’s purchased the game, but this has the potential to cost some of the development funds we’ve made so far, and we can’t risk it. We may be overreacting. But we have no idea of the numbers that could be involved and since an auto-updating pirate version effectively removes any need to buy the game and suggests they are ‘in it for the long haul’ if they are playing the version for numerous updates, we can’t count on ‘try before you buy’ sale conversions from them.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Very unfortunate to hear, but totally understandable. You’ve made the right move, and your fan base will stick with you regardless!

And hey, pirating this early in the game just means you’re definitely creating something UTTERLY COOL!! And that’s something. :)

You know… reading this really old comment reminds me of something. People DO pirate Minecraft, and they do it with an auto updating launcher too, and guess what, it is the SAME LAUNCHER they have used since the alpha phase!!! Of course Mojang also has a line of Minecraft merch adding a steady stream of cash to their profit margin.

Kinda hard to call a game that so blatantly ignored this level of piracy, and still made tons of money, crap. Obviously they did something right. (and still are, with all they money they are still raking in from it.)

You think I didn’t see that in the post? Of course I did.

Derimagia and Viri are on to something I tell ya because I am waiting to buy this game when I could play it from its own launcher. When that happens, I will buy from them to be a part of this, I love zombie games, then launch it through Steam so that all my Steam friends see I am playing this, just like I did/do with Minecraft. Then I will update it through their launcher, just like I do with Minecraft. I can hardly wait, I love Indy Dev games :)

Sorry to hear this guys, I found out about your game this afternoon and just finally got the opportunity to sit down and buy it.

I bought it anyways. I believe any game in the Minecraft “model” should be supported in every way – the fact that PZ seems like a game that finally takes zombies seriously is icing on the cake.

Best of luck. I hope to play your game soon. Apparently the Pirates’ code has changed over the years, from “Try before you buy” to “screw the little guy” and “ruin everything for everyone else”.

Potential loss of money through piracy is arguable, as you say. But when it’s eating your bandwidth and costing you real money, that’s not right. Hopefully they didn’t mess things up too badly, but it’s definitely a better lesson learned now than later. This is where a system like P2P works so well. If you could design it so that the game itself is P2P in the background, it would save you a ton of money and allow for much better distribution later.

No worries about taking the game down. It’s totally understandable. You’re right that pirating while taking your money places you in a very difficult position. Commando. As it says in the post, it’ll take time for the removal to take effect. Probably 24 hours. It’s a cloud thing. There are hundreds of versions of it all over the world that must be deleted.

You guys are definitely in a pickle on this one, best of luck in figuring out how to let us keep playing while still making money. mac addresses are a layer 2 (link-layer) thing, every single packet that comes into project zomboid only has the mac address of project zomboid’s router on it.

A MAC address has nothing to do with apple computers…

    • CTL
      September 28, 2011 at 3:35 am #

And what if someone has multiple computers? Or, like me, they have their computer change its MAC on every boot (yes that is possible!)?
In case you do not know what a MAC Address is (which, I assume you do, since you are using the term, but for others to know as well), it is a specific identifier that distinguishes a hardware set (a desktop or laptop, or even a cell phone) from other hardware. This is basically the same as an IP address, except it is determined by the hardware, never changes (unless you know how to make it change), is not publicised, and also is used to identify the company which the hardware is manufactured from. The MAC is not very important to regular users, but to sysadmins or IT personnel, is a vital piece of information.

It really sucks when this kind of things happen, It’s most certain that the folks responible for this don’t know even the damage they are causing… but if they do, they’re some pretty f####d up a##holes.
I purchased the game abot a week or two ago, and I completely agree with the measure you’ve taken, and i believe most (if not all) of your fanbase will be ok with this, the only ones that’ll be really angry are the oneswho don’t contribute to the project, but want the latest update anyway.

If you actually hate that you need to play it in a browser, look on the forums, there’s a thread on how you can do it in a measly 2 MINUTES.

Ye gawds I didn’t think that I could hate pirates anymore. I’m against pirates when they go after overpriced unfinished at release AAA games from publishers that can afford it with DRM that screws the paying consumer – it boggles my mind that anyone would attack a project like this. Frankly I think that your stance on piracy is too nice, recommending someone who’s paid grab a pirate copy until prolems are sorted out seems fine to me, but the idea that people think that they can take the fruits of your hard work for free when you’re generally acting in such a sonsumer friendly way sickens me.

They don’t need your business. Ask for a refund and get out if you’re going to bitch and make demands. The pre-order is made very clear in it’s nature as an early pre-alpha version of the game.

This game was posted all over a certain forum with topics such as “WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS” and “WHO’S EXCITED FOR THIS?”

As if everyone is meant to think “Gee, I’m really behind the times, I haven’t even heard of this game! Best find out about it and buy it!”

Nobody is fooled by it. If devs or affiliates of indie studios just came personally instead of an adopted fanboy persona and said

“Hey, we’re working on this game and I thought I’d share it with you guys, get a little feedback and generally have some laughs at the buggy state it’s in.”

Nobody would react with such bile and hatred.

Small companies trying to compete with EA-level hype / marketing techniques = horrid and will only attract negative attention

Small companies taking a genuine personal approach like only small companies can = respectable and welcome

You can’t just come from obscurity and demand people treat you like any other household-name company. Take the time to engage with your audience. The “SEE THIS PRODUCT? YOU MUST HAVE THIS PRODUCT” model doesn’t work any more.

Do a little more research and you’ll realize the project zomboid team are far too busy to do viral marketting at this /pre-alpha/ stage of their game. It is simply fans posting to other sites.

Viral marketing requires a concerted effort to get it started by the devs though. Fans taking it up on their own is one hundred percent separate from Indie Stone. Not every time fans like something and talk about it is a viral marketing scheme. Otherwise there would be no such thing as viral, only word of mouth

And roberto, you should re-read your comment, it makes no sense. Maybe I “don’t know shit” about viral marketing, but I do have a little dose of not so common sense.

I just purchased a lifetime license, sight unseen, for your game to repay you for supporting software downloading.

When your friend drives up in a new car and you say ‘let me have a spin?’ that’s not theft. You just got to drive it for free, and can drive it as often as your friend lets you.

Why is this a crime when it’s software and not hardware? Trick question. It IS NOT A CRIME. But, the MPAA and RIAA would like it very much if you have to pay a fee every time you unlock your car, turn on your TV, or even breathe.

That’s pure capitalism, and nobody really wants that.

I support gaming companies and media companies that PROMOTE DOWNLOADING, particularly torrents, as a method of distribution. I vote with my wallet. So should you.

      June 18, 2011 at 3:20 pm #

There is only one problem with that logic in this case.

these guys have nothing. not a single penny to their name. notch allowed downloads because he was working on minecraft in his spare time after work. these guys MADE this their main job. so they cant be as cool with it, because they need the money. I have bills to pay too, but $8 USD is a small price to pay for something that’s provided me with at least 4 hours of entertainment. in the super nintendo age, $8 for a game like this (sans bugs) would have been effing amazing, and a positive steal.

If you want to compare these guys to a AAA company like bioware or EA, well, one has billions, and the other maybe thousands of dollars to play with.

vote with your wallet, but even when i was in High school, $8 still wasn’t that much money.

      June 18, 2011 at 9:09 pm #

Did you even read this thing at all? They straight up tell you to go torrent it if you really want to at the end. The problem is that somebody made a version that downloads updates directly from their server, which they have to pay real money for.

Money they already have in hand was going to pay bandwidth so pirates could keep the most up to date copy without having to re-torrent the game. Do you really not see how this is a problem?

Wow, some people really are idiots.

    Seriously..

  57. Zaid
    June 18, 2011 at 6:51 pm #

You’re not overreacting. Personally I was gifted the game, but I still feel that the money paid for me should not go to bandwidth for some cheap dirtbag who just has to use the “try-but-never-buy” auto-update version. Instead it should go to this game that is already amazing for a pre-alpha build.

People wanna try an indie game that costs less than a pizza before they buy, their decision, but don’t use up developer resources, especially in pre-alpha since that’s sabotaging the game you’re trying to enjoy before it’s even off the ground.

I hope people realize they’re costing you money this way. I’m tempted to comment on some torrents and make them aware, even if they don’t care.

This is ridiculous. After purchasing this game on my Mac, I’ve had to jump through a series of hoops to get it to work. When I finally do get it to work, I play it a few times and then come back a couple of days later for a brand new problem to try and solve. I download the Torrent and then use my Torrent software to try and play it and yet again something doesn’t work. This myriad of issues is really unacceptable. Hope all these setbacks don´t ruin your games. Damm, to pirate something before paying 50 ~ 60 bucks to see if its even worth it (specially if your salary doesn´t even get close to american minimun wage) is understandable. Now using devs bandwith and money so you can play the game looks kinda evil

    June 20, 2011 at 5:30 am #

I seriously do not understand the praise being heaped on these guys.

First they whine because two of the major online payment providers blocked their accounts because a) they looked like money launderers and b) they didn’t read the goddamn terms of service before signing up. And somehow this was everyone else’s fault but their own.

And now, they’re penalising those who legitimately bought their product because they didn’t think through the implications of their distribution method.

    And blaming everyone but themselves…

And generating more attention at the same time…

I’m voting “shitty marketing technique” on this one and have to echo the recommendations that Indiestone get someone to handle the crap they’re clearly unable to.

  74. kennypu
    June 20, 2011 at 10:24 am #

    understandable.
but if everything is one the cloud, can’t you just change the link to the new version everytime? maybe in a randomly generated name/folder. that way the pirates won’t be able to link to it as easily. rather they would need to create a new version/patch for the game with the new link.

Damn, guys, that sucks. I’m happy to say I’ve paid for my copy, and can’t wait for the future updates. You guys are on to something really awesome here, and since you’ve got some really influential support going for you (prominent mentions by Tim from Ctrl-Alt-Del were what made me buy the game, and tweets by Notch of Minecraft fame drew my attention to this newspost) I know you’ll get this thing done in the end and done well – however, this is a pretty major setback, so whatever damage control you guys need to do, go for broke. The rest of the fans and I will stick with you!

  83. MrMinime
    June 20, 2011 at 12:49 pm #

I’m very sad to see this potentially awesome game going down the drain. But, I think it is a bit to easy to blame it all on Pirating.

    Why?

Well you offer this game only when you buy another game. Now for me, I have no interest in any of the games on the site. So in order for me to buy PZ I need to buy something I dont want.

    That is weird.

Second, charging for a game which is far from finished is kinda … weird? Minecraft being the acception to the rule.

And last, is the limited payment support. Google Checkout, that’s it. You are really limiting it for the public. Now I know the shit you guys have/had with paypal.

You should not have asked money for an unfinished alpha, but you should worked on it longer to make a “finished” version (at least call it that) and continue working on the finished version.

Dont take finished as really finished, but just before asking money make a slightly more solid product.

pls note. I do not approve of pirating! I don’t not download this game, but I was very interested in it and I am following it’s progress closely.

NO SHUT UP THIS IS ALL THE FAULT OF THOSE PIRATES AND YOU ARE ON OF THEM YOU MORON!!!!

    • June 20, 2011 at 2:20 pm #

They’ve explained their reasoning for their business model. No one is forcing you to buy the game. Also, if they can’t use PayPal, Google Checkout is pretty much the only other option they have instead of setting up an entire credit card system to get the alpha codes out. It’s not terribly easy to do when you’re developing an indie game as well as holding a 9-5. There’s probably no time for that kind of thing.

They didn’t ask money for an unfinished alpha, either. They’ve asked money for gamers to take part in a continual testing process which includes a finalized copy and all updated versions in between. I’d say that’s a pretty good deal.

Also, your three reasons don’t really have anything to do with the current situation. They took the game down because of the potential to have their property stolen and their servers taxed by the stolen code. This has nothing to do with how people purchase the game, I highly doubt anyone was frustrated by the selling model and decided to go out and pirate the game on a large scale. If they were going to pirate it, they made that decision before figuring out they didn’t have the brains to link a credit card to a Gmail account.

you guys really seem like people who have absolutely no business sense and are desperately reaching for help.

    • DarkValentine
      June 21, 2011 at 3:21 am #

After reading the entire post made at the start, and then reading your post, I think they DO have business sense. I say it’s a rather smart business move that they are protecting their investment. And here is why I say that. Take my opinion with a grain of salt if you like. I won’t really care, because it may not even matter to you.

They are pulling the plug on the version of the game, that was getting patched to remove the protection that was embedded inside of it, so these pirates can go ahead and get free updates on a pirated copy.

Since these guys who make the game, are getting charged for each download that someone else gets on their piece of cloud, a mass download through a pirated version of the game by an auto-update, which taps DIRECTLY into the cloud server, would indeed hurt them in the long run. And because they are actually seeing the effects very early, they’re taking the smart route, and not place the current version on the cloud anymore.

Simply putting the demo up by way of torrent, while a hassle, is one way to protect their assets, because the current version is not on the cloud server at this time. This in fact saves them any cash at this point, without pirates ruining it any further.

Is it a dick move by the developers? no. Is it poor business practice or lack of real business sense to take measures in protecting what they have, by catching this situation early, before it got out of hand? no. Is it smart to protect what they worked hard for, and do have the right to charge, to ensure better upgrades, updates & a quality game for cheap? I think so. And if it was me in their position, facing loss of revenue, I’d do the same thing.

Catch it early, catch it quick. That’s my slogan.

I play in offline version(dunno it’s free demo, or pirate version). It have no update button and i am glad, that i didn’t make you spent money. Even if i play offline pirate version, i swear, that later when project will be more developed and i will have better financial situation i will buy zomboid. (That’s is bright side of piracy, i know a lot of people who played different games in pirate version, but later they all bought this games. And when piracy costs real money, not potential to developers it’s terrible and unacceptable.) Good job, your project one of the best!

I am a proud downloader, downloading is a great thing especially for overpriced shit ass games, but this, just playing the demo I invested the 5 pounds they are asking for.
If people don’t support the Indie industry, it will never grow, you have great games for nothing, why download them? Financially 5 pouds is nothing.
Please buy this game, now, I bought it even if the servers are down, I don’t care, also, don’t hesitate to donate money when the next Humble Indie pack will be out.

Well I noticed a post a while back about why the guy thinks mine craft is crappy and well I dont think its crap I do think its extremely overrated… now hear me out before the minecraft defence force swoops down on me. Although the game is a fun little tool for building it lacks content. Iv played a few other simuler games that i much prefer such as Dwarf fortress and Terraria. both games booming with conent and vary charming. Mine craft is kinda like the world of war craft of indie games. Its easy to get and accessible to everyone and its simple ya know? you get what you see and thats just about it.

I understand – MC can get boring, but so can Terraria. Hopefully the 1.7 update and the upcoming update to Terraria will change things. I have played both games for a good while now- MC over a year, and Terraria abouta week after it was released.

Not to be a dick here guys, but it’s been a while… Can you at least tell us when we can expect to start playing the alpha we bought again? I don’t want to download the demo, I already got the alpha weeks earlier, and I just want to continue playing with that without having to get some demo (of what appears to be an older build) So let us know when we can get back at it, I’d appreciate it!
Love the game by the way! The first build I played (like more than a month back I think?) was too buggy to play (especially on my Mac), but since the last (few?) updates, I’ve been having a total blast with it. Hearing that so much more is going to be contributed to the game makes me happy.
On a side note, I’d love to know if there is a way for me to suggest stuff to you developers… I’d love to make a list of stuff I’ve come across that needs work, and though I know you probably already have loads of people to help you with that, I’d love to be of assistance wherever I can be.

    Cheers!

I was reading CTRL-ALT-DELETE and he mentioned this game. I came over to the site, and found that the public pre alpha tech demo was released. I downloaded it, and ran the .exe file… it never loads. It says “Click to begin” and so I click…. and it does not begin. Just freezes my computer.

Ironically, in order to get the game, I went to demonoid and downloaded (What I think to be) the same version and it works fine. I would pay for the game, if I knew it would work on my computer, but if the tech demo doesn’t work… then how am I to know if the real game will work? I also don’t have a credit card as I am a poor piece of poo.

The pirated version I got does something weird after the raider comes. He comes in, stays downstairs. Then I creep up and kill him. Take his stuff, and… nothing. No more talking from my wife, no more storyline whatsoever. I wish the public version would work ;\

    Hey guys,
i’ve discovered this game today, played a little with the tech demo and…what can i say…it’s very very clean and…awesome!
I would love to see more games with an heart like that…games that reminds me how a game should be! ( you know, i’m for the “old school”, and the 3d, the rush to (only) the perfect graphics etc, makes me think that the game industry is becoming more and more…dull)
I’m truly happy to give you my money, and i would’ve been also if it was for a little higher price.

…just one more thought…the so called “pirates” should feel ashamed. What’s the meaning of stealing from an indie company?!? For the sake of free software?!? When all that was asked was a very little fee?

  109. Large Arms
    July 8, 2011 at 7:20 pm #

I pirated this game. I then came to the website, read up about it and purchased it. Those who hate pirates as a whole are misinformed. Without pirates i probably would never have bought this game and many others i have. Try before you buy is in effect with many products and yes, demos exist, but they very rarely contain enough content to make an accurate decision on whether or not the game is good.

The way the teams handled this was unfortunate but if it’s available ofcourse they will. It’s their hobby to display their skill, learn about software and make things available to others. The majourity of teams (if aware of their method potential costing a respectable down to earth indie company so much money) most likely wouldon’t of done it, but theres always that one guy.

Anyway, looking forward to this now.

I surely hope you are acting this way on purpose. If you are going to make an argument, learn how to spell and use proper grammar. And don’t try and say English isn’t your first language, because Google Translate can do a better job than this. Hell, my neighbors here in an all-spanish island who never learned English, and in fact hate in a way that Hitler hated Jews; they can type that comment better than you did. To everyone reading, you just invalidated any chance of making a coherent, persuading argument.

P.S. There is a key on your keyboard (if you use a standard-format keyboard) that is located two keys to the right of the letter ‘m’. This key has a small dot on it. If you press that key, it types a small dot on the screen, like this: ‘.’ This is called a ‘period’ and is a very vital punctuation mark. Please learn how to use it.

Im not going to lie, I totally pirated the game before I spent any money because I wanted to see what it was all about, Once I played it for a little while I gladly threw down the money to support it. The basic fact of the matter is this, if we like it..we will buy it. AND tell our friends about it. It sucks that someone was able to make an auto updating version though, there are those people out there who believe that they are entitled to everything and never have any intention of purchasing the item

I did the same. I saw a thread on a website, and everyone talked about how they loved the game. It seemed interesting and after coming off a Left4Dead binge, I wanted to try it. Yeah Minecraft has an updatable pirate version, so whats the difference with these developers besides the fact that minecraft cannot be played on online servers with the torrent and Notch has already made over $1,500,000,000?

(In case you could not tell I am supporting the devs. decision with obvious sarcasm)

    • July 25, 2011 at 2:03 am #

Well, what do we have here.

You’re clearly a hacker. How do you know that we’ve made over $1,500,000,000?

      • August 5, 2011 at 9:51 pm #

Its basic math, and your clearly not the real notch. Notch charges about $15 per account (given that its 20 now, idc about specifics) there are over 3 million users acording to minecraft.net that have bout minecraft. Ok so multiply 3 million by 15 and you get 45,000 000. so to correct myself minecraft has made over $15,000,000.

If you look at Ubisoft, every game they have released that has DRM has been cracked. Piracy is inevitable. The more you try to stop the more angry potential fans will get at not only at you but the hackers as well and when people complain about hackers they still go about their business, laughing at everyone who is complaining.
There have been multiple articles about how piracy helps the video game industry, especially PC gaming. If someone likes the game that person has a higher chance of purchasing the product and if they don’t like it they’ll just uninstall it and delete the install files instead of wasting money on a product they don’t like because I know I have a few games I regret purchasing.
What I am getting at here is I have been waiting a week or two, forgot when I bought it, to play this game and it’s rather irritating to know that you all aren’t going to release it until you find a solution to the piracy, your best bet is to just not release the game at all if you don’t want it pirated.
So, please, get over yourselves and release the game so your fans can play because I know I am sick of waiting.

    @Chaos Jockey.

If your sick of waiting ask for a refund.

However, before you do so read the initial post again. Where they clearly state:

“always turned a blind eye to pirate copies, even on occasion recommending people who had problems with the legit version try a pirate version until the issues are resolved. We realise the potential viral benefits of pirate copies”

    So they accept piracy happens….

    but –

“these ‘auto updating’ versions of the game could screw us completely. We have a cloud based distribution model, where the files are copied all over the world and are served to players on request, which means we are charged money for people downloading the game.”

So basically what your suggesting is they pay the pirates and the people who use the pirated copy for the privalege.

    Get a life.

  124. Not Buying
    August 15, 2011 at 12:11 pm #

I had my card out and ready to buy this when I saw the client is down…and has been down for two months. I don’t pay for a product I can’t use, it’s poor budgeting.

I’ll be pirating this, for the fact that instead of caring about their customer base (or receiving new customers) they instead bury their head in the sand and cry about piracy.

Also: You don’t run away from a problem. You fix it.

    1. Their are countless options for distribution.
    2. Code a specific check system into a downloadable client, then when the client tries to update, it has to match the check system. While this won’t dial down all of the piracy, it will curb your fees immensely.
    3. Quit trying to be Notch. Minecraft was a fluke, you’re not going to get rich on a game that’s not even in alpha yet. Give the people some substance, and word of mouth will do it’s job.

Also: Shut the fuck up about piracy. It’s not as big of a problem as people try to convince you it is (RIAA). I pirate before I buy, because I’m an intelligent consumer. Paying blindly for something is how the corporate world wants you to act.

    • Your not geting the point
      August 17, 2011 at 11:35 pm #

What there saying is there losing money that could be going to making the game but in stead its going to piraters that are downloading the game every time they run the hack client. so basically your over reacting now buy the game its really awesome. i pirate before i buy too, but come one there’s the DEMO that’s basically the full game so man up and stop being a wussy.

Personally not a huge issue because Minecraft dealt with this and took a full brunt of it, and see where it got them? They shrugged it off because people wanted to pay to support it.

Also people sometimes pirate games out of pure ego because it is something they’ve grown accustomed to.

“The next hit game? Pirate it and see how it’s like, since it’s not technically released yet, right?”

As for the whole auto-update thing, it’s inevitable, even if you do come up with a powerful cloud based model, because people are just going to become more tech savvy and more cunning to flip your model upside down and shake everything out.

So what if they are capable of doing so? You just move on.

    • jick
      August 26, 2011 at 8:05 am #

You didn’t understand the article. They’re not trying to stop people from playing their game. If anything, this is what they want more than anything else. They don’t care how you got the game, they just want you to play it.

They’re just trying to find a way to distribute their game without it costing them enormous amounts of money. They’re not stupid, they’re not brave or pretentious, they don’t think they’re going on an amazing mission to stop all the evil pirates out there, they just don’t want to lose revenue.

I write music for a living. I understand people will pirate my songs. It doesn’t really affect me. What would affect me, though, is if every time someone pirates my songs it takes literal money out of my wallet, which is what is happening here. Well, maybe not EVERY TIME but I can’t think of a good way to make a music piracy relation.

  126. Kai
    August 22, 2011 at 5:11 am #

But if you REALLY want to avoid being nailed by this level of piracy, go to valve and see if they’ll let you make a deal with them and put the game up on their servers, so:

    1) It’s safe and is technically harder to pirate

    2) auto updates everyone who owns the game

    3) is cloud based and you have access to valve’s own HUGE community to take feedback from.

  127. TR

  128. Mada
    August 26, 2011 at 7:53 am #

Oh jeez, wow. Really, general public? Not only did they explain, very clearly, why this auto-updating version LITERALLY TAKES MONEY AWAY FROM THEM (No lost potential sales, no lost physical product, BUT DIRECT MONEY. It’d be like paying someone for playing your Xbox); they also explained that they have no qualms with piracy as a whole, only those that are actually costing them money. I am a pirate through and through and it’s easy to notice, if you READ THE GOD DAMNED ARTICLE, that this has nothing to do with it. Either support these guys or don’t, but don’t fucking punish them for their distribution method.

There is no argument you can make against this article. They covered their bases fluidly and expertly. If you have nothing good to say about this article, except perhaps that they should have thought their distribution plan out perfectly before even thinking about charging people for it, which is still bullshit, then just fucking go home.

In any case, this is a serious dilemma and I hope it is corrected eventually.

What greed? These developers are not like the Mojang crew. They are not greedy in any way. They are trying to protect themselves from serious harm, and protect their assets. You want to see greed? Try Ubisoft or EA Games, with their DRM that feels like it was ripped right out of “1984″. And about the game being hard to play: If you read some of the posts, it is based off of a Dwarf Fortress model. Part of the game is making mistakes, getting killed, and losing. It is not meant to be won, or even played right. This game has no final goal, no endgame, no objective. It is just play until you die. Sometime you die sooner than others, get over it. This is a great game, and worth much much more than the developers are charging for it. They are giving it to you for 7 bucks! They could easily charge 20 or 30 for it, like Mojang. The only difference is that, even in this stage of development, the potential is worth more than Minecraft, Terraria, AND Mount & Blade combined! So try again, learn the ropes, enjoy the game, and support the developer. Remember: Losing is FUN!

Not sure why you all are so hostile to pirates. Yes, I pirate. I pirate games that I am not sure whether to spend money on. For example, I pirated GTA4, and hated it. Should I have wasted the $50 or $40 to buy a game I would just hate? Would you make that move? On topic, though, I pirate Project Zomboid. I heard a rumor about it, and checked it out. The game is amazing, and I am actually preparing to buy it now. I won’t actually make the purchase for a few days, but rest assured, I will buy! You guys deserve the money, and in fact, you deserve more. I would gladly pay $20 or even $30 just to help you guys, because this game is more than worth that price.

Now, about the auto-update version of the game, I understand the concern, and I believe it is warranted. You should take precautions against a version like that, because it has great potential for abuse. This was the right choice, and I’m sure you still have plenty of ways to distribute the game to your users.

Finally, to all you bashers/haters: wake up to reality. Digital piracy is a growing trend. I dont mean a “cool” trend, I mean a “practical, business sense” trend. Indie developers and artists actually ENCOURAGE piracy, because they understand the potential it holds. The only reason we pirates get a negative stigma is because of the media and corporate bias against it. Piracy is not only a way to try-before-you-buy, but its a statement. It says “I am sick of the corporate bullshit, forcing me to pay ridiculous amounts of money for something just because it is ‘intellectual property’.” I do not believe in intellectual property, and I personally believe the existing copyright system is broken. I think the developers of Project Zomboid should move to a “copy-left” license like GPL, Creative Commons, or any of the numerous other copy-left licenses. That, I assure you, will help raise revenue even more.

Regardless, keep up the great work, and please, I beg you, PLEASE, do not go mainstream and turn into Minecraft developer Notch, who lost his focus on the game. He is run by pure profit now, and that is why I moved away from the Minecraft community. I am embarrassed I payed for his game. But I feel that Zomboid is still going in the right direction.

I can’t speak for the rest of the pirates out in the world, but I pirate for only 3 reasons
1:To see if a game is worth buys(Comments of other people’s I do not trust. I have liked games that are universally hated before)
2:Because I am poor and can’t afford it(I usually try to buy the games when I can, unless I particularly hate one of the members involved in its release…Like EA Games. F*** you EA! >< )
3:I can't find it in a store(For certain reasons I refuse to purchase anything over the internet. Let alone something that won't come to me as a solid real object, like a cd/dvd. I'm a victim of Murphey's Law and because of the 2nd reason, I can't let something like that happen.)
Do I think this makes me a good guy? No
Do I feel bad for pirating? lol why would a badguy feel bad?
In anycase, I agree with what these guys(You guys who made this game, not the pirates) did.
Personally, I will pirate a non-auto updating version of this game(Especially because I only know that it is well liked, in development, was mentioned on the Minecraft main menu, and has zombies in it.) But if I end up liking it, and it comes out in stores, I will be the first to buy it (Or 112th as it was the case with Skyrim)

It’s a good thing that our babies are the nicest stalkers lurking out there. I’m sure your husband has, I’ve woken up to see my wife passed out with her boob out and my boy latched on. I’d hear the smacking sound of him latching-off and then slowly turning his head to look at me. Sometimes it was a little surprising.
